10 Essential Mac Shortcuts

Written by iHospital. Posted in How To, iHospital iV

We all love shortcuts, especially when it comes to our beloved Mac computers.  Whether you’re doing a repetitive task that’s sucking up too much of your time or it’s a one-off job that seems more complicated than it should be – it’s wasting your time and we’re here to help you get it back!  iHospital is going to show you 10 extraordinary ways to make life easier with your Mac.  You can thank us later!

1.  Spotlight tricks.

We all love the spotlight. It’s the best tool around for finding things on your Mac, but sometimes it gives us way too many results.  You can remove files your’e probably never going to want in search results in your Spotlight Pane in System Preferences.  You can also re-order categories to have your favorites appear at the top.  You can also launch applications lightning fast by simply typing its name in Spotlight and hitting enter.  Finally, you can ask Spotlight simple mathematical equations. Pretty cool right?

2.  Spellcheck shortcuts.

You can save time by getting OS X to check as you type using Apples’ built in dictionary. Go to Edit > Spelling menu in most apps.  Did you know you can also bring up the spell checker by pressing Cmd + ;? Make sure you set the dictionary to British English rather than the standard English.

3.  Use file shortcuts.

Drag files, folders and servers to the Dock provides quicker access to their contents, especially in the list view.  Adding too many items to the dock and it will look cluttered so be careful.  Finder windows are also an option.  Add any item to the Finder sidebar by dragging and dropping it, and once that starts to fill up, drag items to the toolbar.

4.  Faster camera access.

Most of us use iPhoto to store pictures but did you know Image Capture lets you automatically start the import process and gives you several ‘pro’ options. You’ll find Image Capture in the Applications folder.  After you plug in your camera, it can automatically sort pictures into the Pictures folder and movies into the movies folder.

5. Improve Mail.

Mail is pretty nifty as it gives you an idea of how many new messages you have but more often than not you don’t notice it changing.  Growl provides a notification system that gives you a message preview.  It’s also very customisable, so you can set delays for previews, or decide whether they should stay on your screen.

6. Making Aliases.

Aliases are helpful files that direct files somewhere on your Mac.  Some applications require files to be in a particular plac but if you don’t want them there you can always move them and create aliases to connect them.  Hold down Cmd + Option to create an alias and drag the item to a new location.  You can also use that keyboard combination to drag an item onto a dock app icon to force the item to open in that application (even if it’s not ususally allowed).

7. Expose Tips.

You can easily activate Expose & Spaces pane in Systems Preferences.  It’s a great, efficient way to switch between windows in any of the applications you’re running. Exposes can be triggered by using the screen corners, hot keys are the Expose application.  Expose is also a great way to get straight to your Desktop without minimizing all the windows its hidden under.

8. Proxy icon shortcuts.

Proxy’s are the icons at the top of every window and they perform bucket loads of functions.  An example is if you clikc on it then drag and drop to another window, it’ll be as though you’re dragging and dropping the files.  You can also hold down Option while you’re doing it to copy the item, or hold down Cmd as you click on the icon to get a list of all folders enclosing the current item.

9. Finder copy and paste.

Dragging a file from one window in Finder to another can be fiddly, even with the help of Expose – it’s easy to make a mistake and click off your selection.  A better option is to Copy and Past a Finder item.  Here’s how.  Select the item, or items, you want and select Copy from the Edit menu.  Pick your destination and click paste.  Copy and Paste are also available from the contextual menus or the cog in Finder’s toolbars.

Hundreds Line Up at Apple Stores on Record Breaking Black Friday!

Written by iHospital. Posted in Apple News

Were you shopping in the Apple Store on Black Friday? If so, I hope the crowd left the pepper spray at home unlike the Walmart crew!

The dismal economy didn’t seem to affect the Apple Store on Black Friday. In fact, reports claim that they even broke records for the best sales ever this past Thanksgiving holiday with MacBook Air’s flying off the shelves.  Modmyi mentioned in an article that an Apple retail source speaking in confidence to their friends at 9to5Mac indicated Sunday that Apple’s sales on Black Friday broke all records.  Here’s more of the conversation:

Apple Retail was forecast and broke Retail sales records all over the country today, this is from [redacted] today, the forecast today is more than 4 times what we normally do.  We broke the forecast by 7pm.

Increased sales can also be linked to the fact the Apple Store had the lowest ticket price on big ticket items like the iPad.  The savings ranged from just under 16% for items such as the mouse, keyboard or trackpad to 7% for the 2TB Time Capsule.  The best deal was the MacBook Air going for $898, a $101 savings. Amazon, however, beat their price selling the MacBook Air at $849.99.   The Mac Mini and the Mac Pro were not included in the deals at the Apple Store.

Apple’s prices were slashed at both its online and brick-and-mortar stores for the entire duration of Black Friday.  Many of the latter opened their doors at 6:00 am to accommodate their customers! Talk about service.

Black Friday is the biggest sale of the year for Apple and the temptation proved to be too much for many! Did you venture out to the Apple Store, or did you purchase something online? How big of a discount did you get? Let us know in the comments below!

Mac Store: What will you save on Black Friday?

Written by iHospital. Posted in iHospital iV

I think we can all agree we are obsessed with everything Apple. Some of us camp out for days, others wait in line for hours and some even buy places in line for $1500.00 – you get the point.  Well this Friday, November 25th, 2011 Apple is launching their special one-day Apple shopping event. Yes, it’s Black Friday and people will be lining up once again! What new device will you be buying? Will it be an iPhone 4S? An iPad? Or Maybe a MacBook Air?

Check out the Apple website and you’ll see the teaser ad announcing the upcoming Black Friday holiday sale.  I can already feel the excitement in the air! Apple tells us:

The special one-day Apple event. This Friday, November 25.

Mark you calendars now, and come back to the Apple Online Store for the special one-day event. You’ll discover amazing iPad, iPod and Mac gifts for everyone on your list.

Don’t forget to include your favorite D.i.D. Doctor of iDevices from the iHospital on your list! Just kidding of course. :)

What kind of deals can you get at the Black Friday Sale at Apple? I thought you’d never ask!  According to MacRumors the discounts for 2010 were approximately 8% depending on the product which was similar to previous years.  Here’s a list of discounts from last years’ Black Friday sale:

  • iMac ($101 Discount across all models)
  • MacBook Pro ($101 Discount across all models)
  • MacBook Air ($101 Discount on 13″ models)
  • iPod Nano ($11 Discount on 8GB, $21 Discount on 16GB)
  • iPad ($41 Discount across all models)
  • iPod Touch ($21-$41 Discount depending on model)
We can safely assume this year should be similar to 2010. The discounts will be available in retail stores and on Apple’s online store this Friday, November 25th.  3rd party retailers might offer larger discounts and you might not even have to pay tax depending on where you live.  Last year MacConnection appeared to have the biggest discounts by combining instant and mail-in discounts.  MacBook Pros were selling for up to $240 off – that’s almost 13%!
Want to know how you can save even more of your hard earned cash? Of course you do (if you said no I’d be worried).  Don’t purchase the AppleCare+ for $99.00 when you get your deals on Black Friday.  They may tell you it will save you money but did you know it only covers two repairs at $49 a pop? They also refurbish your device and all your data is lost. Bring it to the iHospital and one of our D.i.D. Doctor of iDevices will repair your device and save your data. It will cost less so you can buy more at the sale! Check out the comparison we did between AppleCare+ and iHospital here.
Let us know what kind of mind numbing discounts you get at the upcoming Black Friday Apple Sale in the comments below!  Don’t forget to drop in to iHospital for all your iPod repairs, iPad repairs, iPhone repairs and Mac repairs.
