Best Practices for Travelling with Your Apple Devices

Written by iHospital. Posted in How To

Summer is almost here and our D.i.D. Doctor of iDevices wanted to share some tips and tricks for travelling with your Apple device such as your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPod.

Data Plan

Want to come home with a $3,000 data bill after your next vacation? That’s what could happen if you don’t adjust your network capabilities. Data roaming is one of the biggest dollar sucking features.  To adjust this, go to the Settings app, tap on General, and then Network.  Make sure Data Roaming is OFF.  This will allow you to make phone calls but won’t allow you to surf the web.

If you do use the web while globe trotting, turn off push email by going into Settings, tap on Mail, tap on Contacts and Calendars, tap on Fetch New Data and set Push to OFF.  You will still be able to check your accounts manually.

It’s also a good idea to check your local carrier’s data plans and international roaming as most have a variety of Global plans.  Make sure to check prior to your travel.

Security

While travelling with your Apple device, you need to think about security risks such as having your device hacked while travelling through airports and other WiFi enabled areas.

First make sure all of your software is up-to-date. This is your first line of defence. Almost every software release patches numerous security issues that are out there.  Download all updates before each trip.

Use strong passwords that include numbers, letters and special characters and make it at least 8 characters. Avoid using dictionary words and change it every six months.

Avoid using unencrypted public wireless networks and don’t forget that paying for a Wi-Fi network doesn’t mean it’s secure. Remember, URLs beginning with ‘https:’ are safer but not foolproof. Turn off your cookies and autofill too.

Travel Apps

Local Eats – This cool application will show travellers independently-owned restaurants and local places only.  You won’t find McDonalds in this app.  Perfect for finding restaurants that the locals love. This app costs $0.99 and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch and iPad.

Currency – A must-have application that offers exchange rate information for over 100 currencies and countries. Convert your dollars on your own and eliminate the risk of vendors taking advantage of tourists!  This app is free and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

World Customs – Are you travelling well off the beaten path? This app is for you.  It offers users everything from local facts and traditions to advice on if it’s safe to make eye contact with locals.  It also includes info on proper greetings, gender issues, gestures, taboos and personal space.  This app is free and is compatible with iPhone, iPod touch or iPad.

We hope you enjoyed our tips for travelling with your iPod Touch, iPad and/or iPhone.  Do you have any tips to add? Don’t forget, if you’re travelling close to one of our iHospital locations, make sure you drop in and say hello! We’d love to see you!
