Here’s a question for you. How often do you check the efficiency of your Mac hard drive? Not very often right? Today we’re going to take a brief look at how you can check the efficiency of your Mac’s hard drive using Disk Utility. To keep your Mac in optimum running condition, you should do this procedure periodically.
Here are three simple steps to check the efficiency of your Mac hard drive:
- Turn on your Mac and launch Disk Utility which can be found within the Utilities folder inside the main Applications folder. Tip: you can quickly launch the Utilities folder from Finder by clicking Command-Shift-U, and you can do the same with Applications by clicking Command-Shift-A
- From the left side menu, select Mac hard drive, and click on the First Aid tab
- Select Verify Disk in the right corner and let it run
This is where the fun begins. Your window will begin displaying all sorts of color-coded messages about the drive’s well being. Messages displayed in black indicate fine working order. Accordingly, messages displayed in red alert you that something is wrong. Most users will see a final message saying “The partition map appears to be OK” which indicates no errors.
Should you see a red error messaging including “Error: this disk needs to be repaired” and its coming from your boot drive, you’ll notice that the “Repair Disk” button is missing in action. In these circumstances, you’ll have to reboot in the Recovery HD partition and just run Repair Disk from there. Make sure you back up your data first.
All in all, it’s always a good idea to backup your Mac regularly. Having a well maintained hard drive isn’t always enough. The Disk Utility procedure isn’t always 100% accurate.
