Over 100 Million Downloads on Apple’s Mac Store

Written by iHospital. Posted in iHospital iV

We really love Apple.  We love them so much that we have downloaded over 100 million apps from Apple’s Mac Store in under one year – that’s 11,415+ apps per hour! Apple revolutionized the way we purchase apps with the App Store, with more than 500,000 free and paid apps available to date.  Apple’s senior vice president Philip Schiller proudly announced, “With more than 100 million downloads in less than a year, the Mac Apple Store is the largest and fastest growing PC software store in the world.”

Although the Mac’s Store’s progress in good, the App Store for iOS blows them out of the water with more than 100 million downloads in less than three months of availability back in 2008.   The new iPhone 4S complete with Siri, iOS5 and iCloud probably helped the App Store for iOS’s numbers too.  This is largely due to the fact the Mac Store has a smaller user base, a smaller library of applications, costs more and isn’t an exclusive distribution platform for OS X.  Slowly but surely, Apple is shifting app distribution to the Mac App Store, even moving most of its own software to the store while limiting boxed versions.  Adobe is offers Photoshop Elements via the Mac Apple Store but you still can’t purchase Adobe Photoshop or Microsoft Office.  It is rumored that Microsoft is said to be actively working to bring Office to the store.

We checked out the social media chatter and some people felt the Mac Apple Store still has a long way to go.  Shortcomings included trial software, discounted upgrades to new versions and transferring licenses from purchased outside of Mac Apple Store to Mac Apple Store.  There should also be an easier way to find apps, just like the iBookstore, it’s a pain to look for new apps outside of the top 25 of a broadly defined category.
