Say Goodbye to the YouTube App in iOS 6

Say Goodbye to the YouTube App in iOS 6

iOS 6 does not include YouTube app

The iOS 6 Beta 4 which was just released to developers does not include a dedicated YouTube app. This is a big surprise as the YouTube app has been included on the iPhone operating system since 2007. This is a surprising move as more and more people are using their mobile devices to watch YouTube videos. For example, according to YouTube:

  • Traffic from mobile devices tripled in 2011
  • More than 10% of global YouTube views come from mobile devices
  • 3 hours of video is uploaded per minute to YouTube from mobile devices
  • YouTube is available on 350 million devices

Is Apple mad at Google?

Why would Apple decide to omit the dedicated YouTube application in iOS 6 Beta 4 like they did with Google Maps? Previously, Apple and Google had a great relationship. Google’s CEO Eric Schmidt even served on Apple’s board of directors. Things started going sour when Google began focusing on Android’s smartphone platform which former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs hated with a passion. Additionally, Apple has sued three of Google’s major Android partners including HTC, Motorola and samsung. There has also been licensing disputes between Apple and Google.

Official Response from Apple

According to The Verge, here is Apple’s official statement as to why they are omitting the dedicated YouTube application from iOS 6 Beta 4: Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.

The Work Around

All in all, this won’t affect the average iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch user very much. Instead of using the dedicated YouTube application, you can easily create a YouTube shortcut on your homescreen and watch all your favorite videos from there.  Check out our previous post, how to add safari bookmarks to your home screen, for instructions on how to do so. Why do you think Apple decided to omit the dedicated YouTube Application from iOS 6 Beta 4? Please feel free to leave your feedback in the comment section below. We look forward to hearing from you.
